Mary Wharton first got her license in 1984. She first worked for her husband's family real estate firm located in Old Town Alexandria, Wharton Real Estate. She later went to work for Century 21, and finally came to work at Long and Foster Realtors in 2004. Mary received her Associate Broker's license in 1989. She was awarded her graduate certificate from the Realtor's Institute sponsored by U.VA. in 1989 as well. She also was awarded the designation, Certified Marketing Specialist, from the Realtor's Marketing Institute, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors.
Mary's husband, Steve, is also a broker with Long and Foster Realtors. His grandmother, Helen Marshall, founded her own real estate company in Alexandria, VA in the 1940's. Once she was old enough to sell, his mother joined the firm. When his mother married his father, Henry R. Wharton III, he also joined the firm. His parents soon started their own firm with a partner. The firm was called Wharton and Potter, and later became Wharton Real Estate when Mr. Potter sold out his interest. The firm was located at 107 North Fairfax Street right next to the Ramsey House Visitor's Center in Old Town, Alexandria. Steve literally learned the real estate business at his parents' knees. He got his license in 1977, and got his broker's license two years later.
Steve has had extensive experience not just in sales, but also appraisals, commercial and residential rentals and property management as well. He was the former volunteer head of the Alexandria Landlord Tenant Board, and is widely respected for his honesty, integrity and professionalism.
Steve and Mary are both members of the Alexandria Rotary Club. Steve is a past president of the club. This past year, both Mary and Steve were named "Distinguished Rotarians of the Year" by their club.
Steve and Mary work with an excellent administative assistant, Elaine Kallio. Elaine takes care of the day to day details of the business and provides wonderful behind-the-scenes support for Mary and Steve.
